Named after the grape variety used to make this wine, Muscat d’Alexandrie was the “difficult child” of the vintage. Difficult to prune, difficult to pick, difficult to de-stem and difficult to understand when young. However, it has developed into a complex, food-friendly aromatic wine after a year in bottle. Viticulture
Muscat d’Alexandrie is pruned in the unique “Evantail” method. It is grown on a strange mixture of red clay and limestone at the base of Le Roubau, in the Aspres region of the Roussillon. The variety grows may non-fruiting shoots which had to be laboriously removed by hand. 2006 had a wet winter with the first snow for 20 years. After April there was no more rain, resulting in a hot, dry ripening period with very low disease risk. The combination of plentiful soil-water supplies and good weather led to wines with intense fruit and good acid balance. We practice Sustainable Viticulture, no chemical fertilizers are used. Hand-harvested into small picking cases. Vinification
Blend: 90% Muscat d’Alexandrie, 10% Macabeu Alcohol content 12.5%, Residual Sugar 1.6g, pH 3.3 De-stemmed without crushing, gently pressed and settled. Fermented at 17°C for 2 weeks and then racked with no malo-lactic fermentation. Fined only with bentonite. Sterile-filtered before bottling in environmentally-friendly bottles and sealed with natural cork treated with microwave to reduce the risk of TCA. |
