One Block RedClick for Fiche Technique

One Block Red is named in memory of living one block from the World Trade Center on Sept 11th, the catalyst that made us change our lives. We went from a city block to a vineyard block.

Deep ruby in colour. The nose is of raspberry with hints of burnt caramel and dark chocolate. The palate is warm and fruity, with good structure and chocolate on the finish.

A warm and satisfying red wine with just the right balance of tannin. It can be enjoyed on release and will also benefit from ageing for up to 6 years.

One Block Grenache 2006 sold out in within the year. The 2007 vintage only produced 60% of the volume. Below are some reviews of the 2006 vintage:

Awarded 89/100 by Jamie Goode. "This is quite a big wine, with sweet, lush, almost jammy blackberry and raspberry fruit, coupled with some spicy tannic structure. Good depth of flavour and ample fruit expression here: a satisfying, warm, food friendly wine."

Recommended by Jancis Robinson as one of her 30 best wines of the world for the Christmas season.

Viticulture

One Block Red comes from the oldest parcel of vines on the steep chalky slope of Le Roubau. It consists primarily of Grenache noir and Lledoner Pelut, an ancient relative of the Grenache which is only now found in remote pockets of the Roussillon.

The vines are traditionally pruned in the Gobelet fashion and undergo shoot thinning and bunch removal to concentrate the flavours. Harvested by hand.

Winemaking

Destemmed without crushing. The fruit was chilled and fermented in traditional open-top cement cuves. Malo-lactic fermentation occured naturally in cuve and then the wine was transferred to a selection of 10% new and older French oak barriques. Blending with a little Syrah and Mourvedre was carried out after 10 months the aim of highlighting the warm varietal character of Grenache and the elegance of the limestone terroir.

The wine is not fined but gently filtered before bottling.
